We’ve been online discovering and discussing cinema since 2013, meaning we’ve been doing this for over 13 years. I’m proud to say we’ve outlasted many bigger, more viral, more “funded” outlets. What’s the secret to our staying power? I think that’s one of the only things I deeply know to be true and simple in this world: It’s our passion.
First and foremost, the Cinapse team deeply loves film and tv. We don’t make a living doing this, it’s simply that we can’t not do it. We are most certainly not chasing clout or clicks. We write about what we love and what we’re interested in. Sometimes that means an earnest negative review; often it means we advocate for filmmakers and projects we adore – more proponents than critics. Always, it means that we’re inspired, choosing to cover whatever most interests us in the core of our beings, rather than necessarily the newest/latest/best. Does this keep us niche? Certainly. But does it also make us special? I believe so.
Here at Cinapse, we’re human beings sharing human-written work, reflecting and commenting on the human-made art of cinema. We believe movies are the greatest of artforms, combining story, music, visuals, intimacy, and spectacle to make us feel, to cause us to think, and to spark genuine change. We take no orders from an algorithm; we put our genuine reactions and passions out into the world, inviting you to join us.
We’ve seen the rise and fall of film blogs, and we’re still here. We’ve witnessed the end of any kind of monoculture, and we carry on. Peak tv is long in the rearview mirror, and still we write. The world can be chaos. Capitalism can be in its late stages. Resistance can feel futile. But we fundamentally believe in the value of filmmakers creating challenging and satisfying art. And we live to seek out that art, discover it for ourselves, grapple and reckon with it earnestly, and to share that process with you.
There are lots of platforms and socials and outlets and influencers out there. Thanks for reading our work. Thanks for engaging in our community of cinephilia.
